Service-Connected Compensation

Service-connected compensation is a monthly payment made by the VA to a veteran with a physical or mental disability that was incurred in or aggravated by service.  The size of the compensation is based on the level of disability suffered by the veteran, not on need or income or any other criterion.  The greater a veteran's level of disability the more compensation he or she will receive.

There are five general theories under which the VA can award service connection: direct service connection, service connection through aggravation, presumptive service connection, secondary service connection, and service connection for injuries caused by VA health care.
