Welding Rod Manganese
Recent studies conducted at Washington University as well as the regional Parkinsons at St. Joseph's Hospital in Milwaukee confirm a link between elevated manganese exposure and two serious illnesses - Parkinson's Disease and a similar condition, Manganism. Manganese fumes are a by-product of welding rod use.
Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease (Parkinsonism) and Manganism include:
- Fatigue
- Feelings of Weakness and Lethargy
- Headaches
- Muscle Cramps
- Loss of Appetite
- Apathy
- Insomnia
- Speech Disturbances
- Tremors
- Disorientation
- Memory Loss
- Impaired Judgement
- Anxiety
- Hallucinations
- Delusions
- Abnormal Gait
- Loss of ability to control movement
- Sterility
Manganism is caused by exposure to manganese and is one of the leading causes of work-related diseases. The disease can cause permanent damage to the central nervous system, although diagnosing Manganism can be difficult due to the slow onset of symptoms and the similarities between it and other serious non-occupational diseases.
